Your Pet Loss Poems

'Golden'

I held your little head in my hands
And looked into those deep brown eyes
And I touched my nose to yours – as always
(The way dogs kiss)
And you gave my nose a gentle nip – as always
(The way humans kiss)

The vet gave you the needle
Over before you noticed
And we fed you treats and rubbed your ears
As the pain faded and your body relaxed
And you fell asleep
Contented, peaceful, beautiful
Like in your bed at home

We said our goodbyes and left
With a pain in our throats
And tears in our eyes
And a grief so profound
It can only come
