Your Pet Loss Poems
'Remember When: I Am Still There'

This poem was born out of a Mother’s love & care for my adult son as he faced the heartbreaking task of saying goodbye to a dog for the first time. Every detail, from the scratches on the door frames to the quiet vigil kept under the glass, is a true reflection of the life shared in the home of my son and his dog Jack. However, grief is a universal language, and our "best friends" leave similar shadows behind for all of us. I am sharing this piece in hopes that it helps others navigate the "quiet, hollow spaces" left behind after a loss. May it serve as a reminder that though their bodies are gone, their presence remains a fierce and loving guard over our hearts.
Remember When: I Am Still There
Remember when
You see the scratches and bite marks
Throughout the house,
I am still there.
Remember when
You lie on the couch,
I am still there;
Surrounding and embracing you
With the warmth
Of my golden coat;
And when you rise and walk away,
I am still there with you,
As my fur hugs and holds you.
Remember when
You see the empty collars
And silent leashes near the door,
I am still there
Calmly waiting to walk with you,
Steadying your stride
On the path ahead.
Remember when
You see the abundant toys
Scattered all around,
Lying hushed and lifeless,
I am still there;
Faithfully, although unseen, waiting to play.
Remember when
Shadows approach the house,
And a knock is heard at the door;
When dogs pass by the front
The ones I challenged the most;
When delivery trucks make their rounds
Through the neighborhood;
When serene graceful deer drift by in tranquility
During the quiet, dark, abandoned
Hours of the night,
Into the area I once fiercely guarded
From my benches under the glass;
I am still there,
Mutely shattering the quiet.
Remember when
You see my favorite blanket or cozy dog bed
Lying on the bedroom floor
In the dark of the night,
I am still there;
Watchfully guarding over you,
As you ease your weary eyes
To drift into dreams and memories.
Remember when
You find yourself sad and lonely,
In the hush of the empty air;
I have never truly left you,
Only my body is no longer there.
My spirit remains
To fill the quiet, hollow spaces,
And live on in your grieving heart.
Thank you for the wonderful perfect life,
filled with the best of “EVERYTHING”,
especially YOU! Love Forever, Jack (Dog)
