Undertaking the plan you have, is the right thing to do. There must be many people like me, who had a pet, somehow never noticed how deeply they were affected by it; and find themselves broken by the loss. I am a plain and realistic person (don't dress my pets, don't consider myself their 'mom'), have had my dog for 16 years, and never had an inkling of what I actually felt for her.
When I was forced to end her life this week, I found myself feeling like a person would whose entire family had died in an accident. I am scaring myself and my partner with the intensity of the anguish.
Sites that discuss pet bereavement in a deeper way, are vital. Not everyone wants to talk to people about pet loss; and if you happen to find someone to talk to they invariably make things worse by talking about their own pet's horrible death. Do carry on, and I wish you success.
