The traditional wood pet urn is probably the most familiar type of pet cremation urn and human cremation urn and the one most people visualise when thinking of cremation urns.
At one time the wooden pet urn was the only pet cremation urn available to pet owners but in the last decade or so the choice of urns for pet ashes has grown considerably with ceramic pet urns, glass pet urns, pet photo urns, eco friendly cardboard urns and many types of custom pet urns now available.
Henry, Bo and Gryphon - all now at Rainbow Bridge The traditional wooden pet urns below are made from solid hardwood and available in walnut, maple and oak. There is a leaded brass nameplate on the front of these urns that can be engraved with your pet's name and you simply remove the bottom or the top of the pet urn and place your pet's ashes inside, the bottom or the top is then secured with screws to safely protect your pet's ashes.
Some pet urns go one step further and also include a window on the urn allowing you to place a favourite photo of our beloved pet inside. They come in many shapes and sizes and are also available in various woods including walnut, maple and oak.
Now this next type of pet cremation urn is one of my favourites, as it combines the timeless and traditional appeal of a wood pet urn with modern digital photo technology.
Many of us have a wealth of digital photos stored on our computers of happy times with our pets and this type of innovative pet cremation urn allows you to store and display hundreds of photos, includes a screen and a remote control and is available in various types of wood, or made to give the appearance of them.
Photos can easily be transferred from your computer or laptop to the digital photo frame using the USB cable provided.
These next wood pet urns are slightly different to the traditional wooden pet urn in that they are shaped like a dog kennel or 'K9 Cottage'. They are made from various types of wood, and include a leaded brass nameplate and photo holder so you can display a favourite photo of your pet.
Again the bottom of the wood pet urn is removed and your pet's ashes are then placed inside, and the bottom is screwed shut to safely protect them. As well as dog pet urns and cat pet urns, wooden urns are also now available for much larger animals and pets. There are urns specially designed to hold the ashes of a beloved horse or pony for example. They can come with photo holders and engraved nameplates, and are often constructed from wood such as pine, cedar or redwood. There are often other personalisation options available such as horse figurines which can be added, and many owners like to carry out their own customisation by adding personal items such as shoes or tack items belonging to their lost friend.
There are now a wealth of pet cremation urns and wood pet urn available which not only provides us more choice as pet owners but also helps to highlight our need to grieve for our beloved pets. The greater the choice available the more we are able to choose urns for pet ashes that are in keeping with our own style and preferences but they also give us a unique way to commemorate our pets.
Whilst there are many styles and sizes available it is important to check that the urn you are intending to purchase is the correct size to hold your pet's ashes. Too big a pet urn is fine as it will hold your pet's ashes and may also offer the option of keeping more than one pet's ashes together, or adding precious items such as leads and collars to the urn, but too small and you may be disappointed. Most suppliers of pet urns provide clear instructions of how to measure if a pet urn is the correct size but it can still be confusing even if you know how to work this out.
If you are in any doubt just email the supplier you are thinking of purchasing from and ask, they are very used to these kinds of questions and will usually be only too willing to help ensure you buy the correct size product.

The wood pet urn still remains a firm favourite for many people though, with traditional wooden pet urns still being amongst the most popular and custom and handmade wooden pet urns now also available.
