Same breed...
by: Luis

I lost my english bulldog 2 months ago. The pain is still there and will never go away. To make sure of that, I tattooed her portrait on my right arm. Do I plan to get another english bulldog? Yes I do!!! Even though your dog can never be replaced, if you loved the traits of that particular breed, then why not get another similar dog? At least you'll learn to love once more.

Dear Jan

I'm so sorry to hear abour Cocoa, but he did do really well to live to that age.

My advice would be that it's okay to get another Labrador if you are getting one for the right reasons. Sometimes people get an identical dog to try and sort of paper over the cracks of their grief, and yes this is a bad idea, because the dog will grow up and won't necessarily be like the one they have lost and they may find themselves resenting the new dog or just being disappointed.

But if you are considering getting another Labrador because you just happen to really like that breed and won't have any expectations for it to be just like Cocoa, then I can't see why not. I have had Golden Retrievers for many years, simply because I really like their personalities and sweet natures and they are the type of dog that fits in with my lifestyle.

Each one doesn't replace the dog before because they are all individuals, but I'm sure it must look to the people around me like I am trying to buy a carbon copy sometimes. But as long as I know I am doing it for the right reasons, that is all that matters.

I hope this helps.
