'My Black Dog'

by Renay
(Australia)

I lost my Chihuahua cross last month. It was fast, horrific gut wrenching & cruel. Only 5 he never once had to go to vet. He was happy playing in the morning then 12 short hours later he was put to sleep.

Vet said parvo but I know it was gastro. 2 tests negative plus he ticked all boxes for gastro but parvo info didn't match. I took him to vet at 1 am after he started shitting blood. Thought he'd stay overnight get medicine then come home. She said he was dying right there & then. He was suffering so I ended his pain.

Had to go home without him to face the task of scrubbing blood out of carpet at 3 am. My bed was full of blood. Rushed my other 3 dogs to my vet next morning to get vaccinated but told it won't stop parvo now. Told all dogs will also have parvo as it is so extremely contagious. Only hrs before I lost Koda now I'm told my other kids could die. They are all fine proving it wasn't parvo.

I can't have kids so my dogs are my life. I feel so guilty that I didn't take him to vet as soon as he vomited. I thought it was upset tummy. I can't stop remembering the suffering & pain he endured. I let my boy down. I really want a tattoo of him as I know it will help my grief I just can't afford it.

I had him cremated so now I have a shelf dedicated to him. His collar, toys bowl & I've vacuum sealed his pillow to keep his scent. I have lights I put on everyday. I sleep with his favorite toys. Still call him. Go to buy toys then remember its not necessary. The pain is devastating & consumes my mind. It's quiet & his best mate (my other Chihuahua) is lost. He sits in the window watching & waiting looking so sad.
