Loving and Missing Jeter
by: Deb

Lee,

I just read your diaries. I am trying to cope with the loss of my dog of 14 years, Sugar (04/06/09). It will be three weeks' tomorrow and the pain and sense of loss (and still worry about her) consumes every moment of every day. She was euthanized a day after her 14th birthday (had advanced stage degenerative myelopathy). The deliberate, long look into my eyes is most haunting, trying to interpret it, trying to tell myself she was just simply looking into my eyes and that I am trying to read more into it....

So I Googled about pet loss and came across your story about Jeter and felt your intense sadness, loss and longing for Jeter. I remain hopeful as it seems acceptance is settling in for you, yet still feel your deep sadness. What underlies all of your words is your overwhelming love you had and will always have for Jeter, and Jeter for you, unlike anything experienced with another another human or pet. I do understand.

I am glad you took the time to write your diary. It is a tribute to Jeter and anyone who reads it will understand the true gift that only a "once-in-a-lifetime" pet like Jeter is to all who had the pleasure of knowing. My beloved Sugar was "my Jeter."

If it is possible, I know one day you will see that "sign" from Jeter. I hope it is soon. You know how much you loved Jeter and Jeter knows too. And now anyone who reads your story knows as well. Jeter has touched my heart through your heart-spoken words. His story was meant to be told.

Thank you for sharing your story, Lee. It's April 2009 and I hope you are all doing well. Maybe one day you will feel like adding a chapter to tell us how you are going.

Hugs,
Deb S.
