'Reggie'

by Madeline Shires
(Australia)

My dear, beloved friend, whom I loved more than life itself, is gone. My darling Reggie, the Plymouth Rock rooster, was snatched from my arms by a sudden illness.

He came into my life as a chick, a gift from my Grandfather. He did not like the other chickens, preferring my company. Many hours we spent in the back room, preparing for his eventual show career.

Alas, it was not to be, and he died in my arms aged around six months. No-one understands how much my darling meant to me. He was not only a chicken. He was my love, my joy, my happiness and my pride, but most of all, my friend.

He was loyal, he was true, and he never hurt anyone or anything. Nothing or no-one can give the companionship my Reggie gave.

Beatae memoriae
Reggie

'Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night, sweet prince;
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.'
-Hamlet, Act V
